A Takes A Larger Share.
Names ending in A accounted for 29.5% of girls in the published 1996 records and 43.2% in 2025. This is a pattern across thousands of names, not just whichever name finished first.
Spelling Is Not Sound.
This chart follows the final written character. Hannah counts under H, not A. Different spellings remain separate in the source, and hyphenated names keep their final character. It is not a count of pronunciations, languages or backgrounds.

Sources & Method
We use the Girls worksheet of the ONS 1996–2016 archive and Table 6 of each annual girls’ workbook for 2017–2025. Each published name count contributes to its final character, after trimming surrounding whitespace and converting that character to uppercase. Non-A–Z endings remain in Other; none are discarded.
The denominator is the sum of published girls’ name counts in each year, not all girls born that year and not the number of unique names. ONS suppresses counts below three and excludes names not stated. We cannot recover the missing names’ endings and do not present the result as an exact share of all births.
The older combined archive includes births to mothers living outside England and Wales. Recent Table 6 notes exclude those births. That coverage difference can affect comparisons, so this is a descriptive pattern in the published files rather than a precisely harmonized population trend.
Leading names in each letter’s detail are ranked by that year’s published counts, with alphabetical tie-breaking. Source files are preserved separately and fingerprinted in the download. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
